La Otra Alpujarra

This is a different view of the Alpujarra, so if you're looking for the standard tourist fare, you won't find it here. But if you stick around, you'll find there's more behind any tourist façade - if you're interested in finding it.

The Alpujarra stretches along the southern side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, facing the sea. From the west it's just behind the city of Granada and runs eastward into the province of Almería, to the Gádor Sierra and the upper part of the Andarax River. To the south, The Mediterranean coast is considered its natural southern boundary.

The western Alpujarra is virtually split in two by the deep valley between the Sierra Nevada range and the Lújar range and the mountainous area known as La Contraviesa to the south. The Guadalfeo River and its numerous tributaries run through this valley.

La Alpujarra se extiende a lo largo de la vertiente sur de Sierra Nevada, de cara al mar. Por el oeste, empieza después del Valle de Lecrín, al sur de la ciudad de Granada, y continúa hacia el este hasta penetrar en la provincia de Almería, donde llega hasta la Sierra de Gádor y la parte superior del río Andarax. Por el lado sur, se considera la costa mediterránea como su límite natural.

La Alpujarra occidental está prácticamente partida en dos por el profundo valle entre Sierra Nevada y las sierras más meridionales de Lújar y la Contraviesa, por donde pasa el río Guadalfeo, con sus numerosos afluentes.
